Holidays to Riviera Maya

The clue’s in the name with Riviera Maya holidays. If ‘Riviera’ conjures up images of sandy beaches, sparkling blue sea and swaying palm trees, then you’re on the right track. Next, the ‘Maya’ bit, which comes from the awe-inspiring ruins that pepper this region - the last vestiges of the ancient Maya Empire. Put them together, add in a string of attractive resorts, some amazing ecological parks and a scattering of freshwater cenotes, and you’ve got a pretty amazing holiday destination.

Stretching from rollicking Cancun in the north to serene Tulum in the south, the Riviera Maya is home to a succession of fabulous beaches that offer something for everyone. This coast’s linchpin is Playa del Carmen, which packs quite a punch with watersports, great shopping and rocking nightlife. But there are plenty of other superb spots to seek out: Puerto Morales holds onto its fishing village charm; the turquoise waters of Akumal are cushioned by silken sands and an offshore reef; and kicked-back Xpu-Ha is nothing short of picture postcard-perfect.

If you can tear yourself away from your beach towel, then there’s more than enough to keep you occupied. Cenotes are a speciality of Riviera Maya holidays, and swimming in the cool waters of a limestone sinkhole, with the sun shafting down through a hole in the ground high above your head, is an experience not to be forgotten. So, too, is wandering among the Maya ruins at age-old sites like Tulum and Coba, or coming face-to-face with a parrot fish while snorkelling on the Riviera’s reef.

Needless to say the food is fantastic, and you can enjoy tucking into traditional Mexican fare like tacos and enchiladas, as well as fish pulled fresh from the sea. Wash it down with an ice-cold beer or a tequila cocktail, and you’ll never want to go home.

Ek-Balam & Hubiku Ecological Park

Ek-Balam and Hubiku Ecological Park

Visit what may be one of the Yucatan’s oldest archaeological sites at Ek-Balam to tour the impressive Mayan temples and constructions. The stucco sculptures and many painted hieroglyphic inscriptions at the site give great insight into the Mayan culture. Afterwards cool off at the Hubiku Ecological Park with a refreshing swim in a picturesque cenote - an underground pool beneath the limestone landscape.

Tulum Mayan Temples

Queens Staircase

Tulum was a fortress and site of a Mayan port which was inhabited by up to 1000 residents before the arrival of the Spanish. The ruin's tropical beach backdrop is the main attraction of this picturesque, much-visited small ruin on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. There are good walkways around the site as well as leading to the beach below for a refreshing swim.

5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen

5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen

A visit to Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue should be on everyone’s list when staying on the Riviera Maya. As you walk around this attractive pedestrian area, you’ll discover boutique shopping, pavement cafes, lively bars and often street entertainment to enjoy. Calm and peaceful during the day, there’s a special air of excitement in the evening when the local nightlife gets into full swing.

Cancun

Cancun

Cancun boasts a prestigious hotel zone with fourteen miles of pristine white beaches and an unrivalled nightlife, bar and restaurant scene. For local colour, the city also has an interesting downtown area with many authentic Mexican restaurants and friendly bars. For those venturing further afield, the idyllic island of Isla Mujeres is just a short ferry ride away from the coast of Cancun.

Yucatan's Cenotes

Fort Fincastle

The limestone Yucatan peninsula is peppered with sinkholes, known locally as Cenotes, and these are filled with underground pools and rivers. Ideal for swimming, some cenotes are set up for kayaking, snorkelling or even abseiling into, whilst others are blissfully quiet and perfect for escaping the heat of the day with a refreshing dip in the fresh water.
