The pirates who once roamed the glittering turquoise waters of The Bahamas may be long gone, but there’s still treasure to be found here. Starting 50 miles off the coast of Florida and stretching for hundreds of miles, the staggeringly beautiful Bahamas archipelago includes around 700 islands and 2,000 cays, only around 30 of which are inhabited. That makes for a whole lot of variety, meaning The Bahamas holidays offer something for everyone - from party islands and family resorts, to diving hot-spots and secluded nature reserves.
Families and anyone in search of a ‘scene’ will happily head to New Providence island - home to the shops, nightlife and bustle of Bahamian capital Nassau, as well as nearby Cable Beach. Stretching for four miles, this superbly sandy sweep buzzes with energy and is perfect for swimming and watersports, or for sloping off to enjoy its beach-bars, restaurants and casinos. Connected to Nassau by a causeway are the famous resorts of Paradise Island, where you can enjoy waterpark and aquarium action, or spend the night clubbing.
But there’s a quieter side to The Bahamas holidays, and Harbour and Eluethera Islands, with their stunning beaches of pink and white sand, plus their hidden coves and pineapple fields, present the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax. Over on Cat Island you can stretch out in seclusion on a pristine strand and simply listen to the gentle lap of the waves, or discover rolling hills, nature trails and indigenous rake-and-scrape music. And take a trip to the impossibly pretty Exumas Islands and you may just have found your dream Caribbean destination.
There’s also plenty to do in the Bahamas, from first-rate diving and fishing, to golf, boat trips, watersports and shopping. So do it all or do nothing – there’s plenty of opportunity for both.
