Holidays in Bahamas

The pirates who once roamed the glittering turquoise waters of The Bahamas may be long gone, but there’s still treasure to be found here. Starting 50 miles off the coast of Florida and stretching for hundreds of miles, the staggeringly beautiful Bahamas archipelago includes around 700 islands and 2,000 cays, only around 30 of which are inhabited. That makes for a whole lot of variety, meaning The Bahamas holidays offer something for everyone - from party islands and family resorts, to diving hot-spots and secluded nature reserves.

Families and anyone in search of a ‘scene’ will happily head to New Providence island - home to the shops, nightlife and bustle of Bahamian capital Nassau, as well as nearby Cable Beach. Stretching for four miles, this superbly sandy sweep buzzes with energy and is perfect for swimming and watersports, or for sloping off to enjoy its beach-bars, restaurants and casinos. Connected to Nassau by a causeway are the famous resorts of Paradise Island, where you can enjoy waterpark and aquarium action, or spend the night clubbing.

But there’s a quieter side to The Bahamas holidays, and Harbour and Eluethera Islands, with their stunning beaches of pink and white sand, plus their hidden coves and pineapple fields, present the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax. Over on Cat Island you can stretch out in seclusion on a pristine strand and simply listen to the gentle lap of the waves, or discover rolling hills, nature trails and indigenous rake-and-scrape music. And take a trip to the impossibly pretty Exumas Islands and you may just have found your dream Caribbean destination.

There’s also plenty to do in the Bahamas, from first-rate diving and fishing, to golf, boat trips, watersports and shopping. So do it all or do nothing – there’s plenty of opportunity for both.

Ardastra Garden Zoo and Conservation Centre

Ardastra Garden Zoo and Conservation

This top Nassau attraction opened in 1937 through the work of the Jamaican horticulturist, Hedley Vivian Edwards. In the 1950s the Bahamian government brought flamingoes with the intention of breeding, as they had become rare there. In 1982 the gardens were bought by Bahamian, Mr. Norman Solomon, who started the first Bahamian zoo. Best known for its flamingos, the zoo now has about 200 animals.

The Queen's Staircase

Queens Staircase

This historic staircase consists of 66 steps that were carved out of limestone over 16 years by slaves in the 18th century to provide an easy route to Fort Fincastle from the city of Nassau. It was renamed in honour of Queen Victoria after the bid to abolish slavery and offers an interesting history lesson as well as fantastic scenic photo opportunities.

John Watling's Distillery

John Watlings Distillery

The 17th century buccaneer, John Watling, opened the Bahamas’ most famous distillery located on the famed and hallowed grounds of the 1789 Buena Vista Estate in historic downtown Nassau. This is where its famous Pale, Amber and Buena Vista rums are handcrafted by Bahamian hands, using local materials and employing traditional English rum-making methods. Enjoy sampling after a tour of the distillery.

Chocolate Factory

Chocolate Factory

The historic Graycliff Hotel in Nassau is home to the Graycliff Chocolatier and factory, where visitors have the chance to learn about the chocolate making process, take part in masterclasses in glazing and dipping, and of course to taste the final products. The unusual additional ingredients combined with the excellent chocolate can include mango, lime and even sweet-tomato, basil and bacon.

Nassau’s Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle

Erected in 1793, Fort Fincastle was named after British captain Viscount Fincastle, who had it built to protect Nassau Harbour and watch for encroaching pirates. Since it was located atop Bennet’s Hill, the highest point on New Providence Island, the fort provided fantastic views of Nassau and Paradise Island as well as the eastern approaches to New Providence. However, its cannons were never fired!.
